The Grand Entrance to the 2015 Met Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City
The chicest and hautest night of the year happened on Monday, May 4, 2015 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art when the Met's Costume Institute held their annual Met Gala to celebrate and support the Anna Wintour Costume Center. This year's theme and exhibit "China: Through the Looking Glass" is the Costume Institute's biggest exhibition to date. The exhibit will showcase China's long history of influencing Western fashion designers and was curated by Andrew Bolton.
Now that we have all of the background information covered we can get to the good stuff! The creme of the crop in fashion and entertainment came out to fete this new exhibit in their best and grandest outfits. Some gave us life while others put us in a coma. Every year there are people who slay and people who just look cray. You just never know what you will get and that is the most thrilling part of it all!
Without further ado lets see who worked their dress and who just looked at mess!
Worked Her Dress:
Rihanna
So many of the people on my best dressed list below had already shown up by the time Rihanna sashayed up the Met's steps with her phenomenal yellow creation that took one woman TWO years to create. An ensemble that takes that long to create deserves a gigantic grand entrance and that is exactly what RiRi gave it! She had people gagging/dying/living/needing/wanting/crying all over social media. We have all seem the memes of people putting her in a skillet as if she were an omelet... All I can say is that I would not mind being served glamour like this every single morning!
RiRi won the night and so she needed more than one photo to show just how major this moment was!
Sarah Jessica Parker
If anyone knows how to kill it at the Met Gala it's SJP! This insane Philip Treacy hat was just what this Gala needed! The entire looked was perfect for the theme and fashion lovers swooned over it all night long! The Met Gala is not about what is on trend or wearing what people wear to regular events, it's about making the glamest statement possible! SJP set me on fire!!
Anne Hathaway
We all know that I only love Anne when I am watching her in The Devil Wears Prada but sometimes she gets it right. She was serving golden goddess realness with this hooded situation and she was posing the house down! Gold is huge in China so this look was an amazing choice.
Bea Shaffer
When you are the daughter of the woman hosting the Met Gala (Anna Wintour) you have no choice but to give the kids what they came to see. Bea Shaffer's dress was so on point for the evening and I just know that she made her Momma Proud.
Karolina Kurkova
I am usually not a fan of short dresses for formal occasions but Karolina Kurkova was all kinds of YAAS in this short Chinese inspired situation. The color, the sleeves the SHOES! Everything was working for her and she did what needed to be done and then some.
Janelle Monae
Janelle Monae decided to cape it up for the second year in a row at the Met Gala and I am totally Ok with this decision! I love that she was on trend with the two piece look and on theme with the Chinese collar. Without the cape this would have been a bore but with the cape she landed herself on lots and lots of best dressed lists.
Jennifer Lopez
I put J.Lo on my best dressed list because I love that she did a look with a dragon. It was very fitting for the night but I was not really feeling her hair and make up which are usually on fleek. I guess when you are ultra fab like Ms. Lopez the Met Gala is just another Monday!
Kendall Jenner
The color of this dress was perfection against Kendall Jenner's skin tone and the neckline was perfect for the theme of the night. Last year Kendall was at the beginning of her major moments in the fashion industry and this year it is almost like she has been in the game for years and years. Don't think I have forgotten those early Keeping Up With The Kardashian years when Kim tried to take Kendall to NYC to begin a modeling career and Kendall was having none of it. Graduating from high school and freaking out about what to do with your life seems to have a way of changing people's persecuting I suppose...
Rosie Huntington-Whitely
I love this dress on Rosie H.W. because it is just the right amount of cut outs. Her hair and make up are sickening and her entire look was just right (and when it's right, it's right). I wonder if she ever gets tired of looking gorge all of the time?
Kerry Washington
Gowns like this were made specifically for photographs like the one above and Kerry absolutely knows this! There are certain things you think about when dressing for an event like this and an over the shoulder moment should absolutely be one of them. Love her matching pink lip too!
Solange Knowles
Solange Knowles knows how to "kick" things into gear when it comes to making a fashion statement and this year's Met Gala moment was no exception. This dress might be wrong for so many other nights and occasions but it was 100% right for this! Also, If you are the kind of person who does not like to shake hands with people then this dress is for you!
Zendaya
I am surprised that 3 short dresses made my best dressed list but to be fair, they were not your run of the mill basic bitch dresses (one is coming up below). I love the cut of Zendaya's dress and the train made it even more playful and perfect for the evening. She reminds me of Judy Jetson heading to prom but in the best way possible!
Justin Bieber
I feel like the Chinese have influenced so many beautiful fabrics and patterns for menswear and unfortunately a lot of the men did take advantage of this. I have to say that the Biebs did it right and looked amazing in this gold dragon jacket. I also loved the cut and the button placement of his dress shirt for this event. I totally would have rocked this look but I probably would have lost the glasses because doesn't he kind of look like Psy?
Looked A Mess:
Grimes
Someone forgot to tell Grimes that this year's Met Gala theme was not "Troll Dolls Take NY," because that is exactly what she looks like. She is the poster girl for the "looked a mess section." It looks like she woke up late, tossed her hair in a messy going to the gym pony tail, threw on some Hunter Wellies and called it a day. I hope she is not paying for a stylist because homegirl is getting ripped off!
Lorde
Lorde's name for the night should have been "Borde" because that is what I was... bored! This dress does nothing for her and it is just super basic. If you are going to dress like you don't care about being at the event then why bother going?
Chloë Grace Moretz
Remember when I was talking about basic bitch short dresses... well here it is. Did she think she was going to an 8th grade formal? This is the Met Gala not your best friend's birthday cookout. Get it together chile!
Dakota Johnson
From a BFF's birthday cookout to this mess that Dakota Johnson wore. Did she just come from a batchelorette weekend in Vegas? This dress is 50 Shades of Basic and so underwhelming for this event. If you can find it on the Vegas Strip, do not wear it to a formal event!
Jennifer Lawrence
This look is all wrong for J. La and it makes her look like J. Blah! The hair and make up are also not doing it for her and she looks a tad too tan. The sad thing is that she is probably making bank wearing those jewels and that dress so I guess the joke is on all of us!
Jamie Bochert
Dear Jamie, the punk theme for the Met Gala was two years ago! It looks like she just got off from her shift at the gentleman's club and decided to pop on into the Met Gala on her way home. Her garment bag must have been switched with some guy at the Hell's Kitchen dry cleaners after the Black Party. She walked away with this and he has some fabulous gown that will be strutting down 9th Avenue this Summer.
Reese Witherspoon
I love Reese but I don't think Elle Woods would have approved of this look for the Met Gala. It is a beautiful dress for a charity gala or an awards dinner but not for this night. It is too simple and there is not enough drama involved. I will let you go this time Reese because I love you and you still look gorgeous anyway!
Sofia Vergara
I also thought that Sofia Vergara could have done so much better! This just does not say Met Gala in any way, shape or form. The tragic thing is that there are hundreds of designers clamoring to dress her and even make something custom and THIS is what she showed in. Next time Sof... next time!!
Constance Jablonki
Last and certainly least when it comes to any kind of impact at the Met Gala is this... choice (I don't even know what to call it). What about getting an invite to the hottest fashion event of the year makes you think it is OK to wear a tube top, some LuLu Lemon yoga looking pants and some old school looking house slippers? I don't care who this chick is, if I was working the door I would be like, "Ma'am, I'm sorry, this is a formal event and I cannot let you in until you go home and put on a gown or some non lounge wear." It looks like she wore this to be comfortable during hair and make up and forgot to put her real outfit on. I wonder how many people were like "Hay... GIRL... YOU LOOK... AMAZING.." Poor thing!
That is it for this year's Met Gala edition of "Worked Her Dress Or Looked A Mess." As always, please feel free to voice your opinions on who you loved and loathed in the comments below!
