"Hello, it's me, Valentina!" The first time Valentina uttered those words upon entering the RuPaul's Drag Race season 9 work room, a star was born. Valentina quickly became a house hold name and a fan favorite on the mega popular reality show hosted by the Supermodel/drag Queen of the World, RuPaul Charles. Although Valentina did not win the crown, she did win Miss Congeniality as well as thousands of fans around the globe (including me).
When I first started watching season 9 of RuPaul's Drag Race, I had never heard of Valentina but she kept winning me over each episode. The thing I loved about her the most on the show is that she was extremely proud of her Mexican and Latino heritage and that she always looked sickening. In the past Drag Race has had Latina Queens but they were often portrayed as not being very intelligent due to language barriers and it often felt as if they were not taken seriously. I feel that Valentina was allowed to showcase how stunning and talented she is on the show and for once it felt like a Latina queen was truly taken seriously as a possible top contender. It did not seem like they were focusing on her accent or language barriers as much and I LOVED that her drag mother is Our Lady of Guadalupe or La Virgen de Guadalupe. I related to Valentina in a lot of ways and it was great to see a young, gay Latino mix her culture, spirituality and drag art form all together on television.
Fast forward to Valentina being the guest star at Voss Event's Drag Brunch in NYC! As soon as I found out she was coming I had to get a ticket and go see Le Reina! Valentina looked gorgeous as per usual on stage. I kept saying "that is a woman up there," because Valentina was serving glamorous Latina fish on a silver platter! She performed/lip synced two Spanish numbers and gave the audience drama and tons of emotion. I was in awe the entire time!
After the brunch was over, Valentina made sure to meet with her fans to sign photos and take pictures. Check out photos from the Drag Brunch below, my photo moment with Valentina and what celebrity was in attendance to see the show. It was truly a Sunday Funday!
